Description

This real photo postcard shows a photo of country music performer Charles Eugene "Smokey" Pleacher.  Under the photo it is signed in ink, “A Pal Smokey”.  Online I found a reference to the comedian and country music performer Smokey Pleacher having been involved with the country music radio show put on by Jim and Jane Claar who were very active in the country music scene in Central Pennsylvania in the 1950s. On the back of the postcard is lightly penciled "Western Vagabonds" which was the group that included the Claars.
The collection that this piece came out of includes country music performers who were connected to the Claar's radio show and the outdoor performances of country music that were organized by the Claars.
Smokey Pleacher was born in Manna Choice, Pa in 1918 and died in Altoona in 1971. He was a musician and a comedian who was part of the legendary Doc and Williams radio show on the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree. Starting in 1955 he worked with Hawkshaw Hawkins and Jean Shepherd on the Grand Ole Opry. One tidbit of interesting information found online is that Smokey is the great-uncle of Jeremy Nelson, a member of the bluegrass band Mama Corn, who is a former Geico Caveman.
The card measures 5 7/16 inches by 3 1/2 inches. The postcard is postally unused. The pics clearly show the condition. On the back near the left edge is lightly written in pencil, “Western Vagabonds” which would be a reference to Jim and Jane Claar and The Western Vagabonds who were Central Pennsylvania’s hillbilly country music stars.
This card is from a collection of items connected with country music performers. The collection was put together by Bessie Auten from approximately 1942 to 1955 when she worked at the Radio Corral near Williamsport, Pa. Radio Corral was a series of outdoor weekend country music performances run by Jim and Jane Claar in the forties and by Dean and Bob McNett in the fifties. Many country music legends of the time performed at Radio Corral. The Claars and then later the McNetts also produced radio programs of country music.
